Message I have a Fluke 87 and a Radio Shack (Microtona) multifunction. They both work well- the Fluke is a bit more rugged, the Radio Shack has more features.

It depends on what you want to do with the meter. For just checking some voltage measurements, a cheapo meter is probably OK. But if you spend $100 or so and get a really nice meter, you can look at lots more stuff- temperature, capacitance, AC and DC current and voltage, etc- my Fluke records mins, maxes, and averages, which is a good feature.

The analog vs digital thing is tricky. Digitals aren't necessarily more accurate, just easier to read. My father in law has an old Simpson meter that he swears by when we are doing wiring in my house. It is tremendously precise and big enough to read from across the room.

It's a diagnostic tool. You will get what you pay for.
